A system that costs a fixed sum to deliver then needs hosting, dependency updates, security patching, occasional fixes and someone who understands it, every year, for as long as it runs. Business cases that fund the first and not the rest are how systems become liabilities.

A subscription looks expensive next to a one-off build until the build's ongoing costs are included, at which point the comparison frequently reverses.
When the people who built or configured something leave, the cost of the next change rises sharply unless documentation and handover were treated as deliverables rather than courtesies.
Ownership after launch (hosting, monitoring, dependency updates, security patching and support), and the cost of the knowledge walking out when the original team moves on.
Often decisively. A subscription that looks expensive against a one-off build frequently wins once the build's annual ownership costs are included over the same period.
